DeepSeek Launches Broad Image Recognition Mode with Multimodal Understanding in Internal Testing
DeepSeek has started internal testing of its large-scale image recognition mode, marking a full transition into the multimodal text-and-image era for this domestic large model. After a small-scale beta in late April, the company significantly widened access to the "Image Recognition Mode" on May 9, and most test accounts can now use this feature through a dedicated entry point in the chat interface. Although still labeled as "internal testing," the fact that it appears alongside "Quick Mode" and "Expert Mode" above the input bar shows that multimodal understanding is now a core part of the product lineup.
Unlike basic OCR text extraction, DeepSeek's latest upgrade focuses on deep image recognition and semantic understanding. In practical tests, this mode can logically analyze visual information, allowing users to perform complex cross-media interactions simply by uploading images. This step fills a gap in DeepSeek's multimodal capabilities and brings it significantly closer to international top models like GPT-4o.
