Cyber Judge enters online gaming world as Dragon Quest X integrates Gemini, letting Slime teach players

When a long-running online game that has been around for over a decade meets the most advanced generative AI, it's like an old tree unexpectedly bursting into new blossoms.
Recently, gaming giant Square Enix officially announced plans to integrate Google's Gemini large model into its flagship online game Dragon Quest X. This move represents both a cross-industry tech breakthrough and a bold attempt to use AI to solve the challenge of attracting new players to aging online games.
The standout feature of this update is the new companion character Chatty Slimey. This talkative slime, powered by generative AI, will serve as a player's personal guide:
Real-time Interaction: Players can chat freely with Slimey, and it will generate voice responses automatically.
New Player Guidance: To tackle the complex tasks and guidance challenges that new players often face, the AI offers precise real-time assistance.
Emotional Support: Slimey is no longer a rigid NPC. When you defeat a tough enemy or happen to obtain a rare item, it will even pop out to "chat" with you, sharing in your joy.
Dragon Quest X, since its launch in 2012, still boasts remarkable longevity with tens of thousands of monthly active players in Japan. However, it also faces the dual challenge of retaining veteran players and lowering the steep learning curve for newcomers. By integrating Gemini, Square Enix aims to break away from the monotony of traditional game tutorials and attract a new generation of players with more lifelike AI interactions.
Interestingly, the game once entered the Chinese market in 2016, operated by Shanda Games, but unfortunately ceased service in 2019. Now, seeing the Japanese version revitalized with AI, many veteran players in China lament: If the slime back then had been that smart, the outcome might have been completely different.
From "fixed scripts" to "generative dialogue," Square Enix is redefining the social and guidance experience of massively multiplayer online games using AI. When a classic IP meets Google Gemini, this slime that can be both adorable and educational—can it successfully steer this veteran game into a new era? The market is watching closely.
