HomeComet: Perplexity's New Web Browser Unveiled
Perplexity, the AI-powered search engine, has announced plans to launch its own web browser named Comet. While the browser isn't available yet, interested users can sign up for updates on Perplexity's website. A spokesperson for Perplexity hinted at a transformative approach to browsing, stating, "Just like Perplexity reinvented search, we're also reinventing the browser." However, specific details about the browser's features or release date remain under wraps.
Entering an already saturated market, Comet will face stiff competition from established players like Chrome and numerous third-party browsers. Some of these, such as the upcoming Dia browser from The Browser Company, also integrate AI-powered functionalities, similar to what Perplexity offers in its search engine. Perplexity seems to be banking on its existing user base to help Comet gain traction in this competitive landscape.
The company has been expanding its product lineup at a brisk pace. Earlier this month, Perplexity unveiled a "deep research" product, positioning it against offerings from giants like OpenAI, Google, and xAI. This followed the January launches of an AI-powered assistant for Android and an API for AI search.
Since its inception in 2022, Perplexity has attracted significant investment, reportedly raising over $500 million and achieving a valuation of $9 billion. The search engine currently handles over 100 million queries weekly and is actively working on monetization strategies, including an advertising program.
However, Perplexity's growth has not been without challenges. The company is embroiled in legal disputes with publishers, including News Corp's Dow Jones and the NY Post, who accuse Perplexity of operating a "content kleptocracy." Other news organizations, such as The New York Times, have also raised concerns about content replication, issuing cease-and-desist notices. Despite these issues, Perplexity maintains that it respects publisher content and offers a revenue-sharing program to media outlets.
