OpenAI has significantly upgraded its Codex model. Tibo, the engineer overseeing both Codex and ChatGPT, confirmed on social media that the GPT-5.6Sol model, featuring a one-million-token context window, is now accessible to all ChatGPT users.
Previously, this extensive context capability was restricted to API access. Now, ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers can manually enable this feature in the Codex coding assistant, unlocking a context window of approximately 1.05 million tokens.
For developers, this update allows Codex to handle larger codebases, tool outputs, and extended conversation histories before compressing past data. This enhancement streamlines refactoring, complex debugging, and long coding sessions, effectively resolving previous limitations that hindered large-scale project maintenance.
The development team advises caution, noting that the default context length balances performance and cost. Setting the maximum limit can rapidly deplete your weekly usage quota.
