Anthropic, the prominent AI startup, recently ran a stealth test on its Claude Pro subscription benefits. Some users discovered that when attempting to subscribe to the $20 monthly Claude Pro plan, the benefits page clearly stated it no longer included access to the Claude Code feature. This adjustment quickly ignited widespread discussion among developers, as for many programmers, Claude Code was the primary reason for opting for a paid subscription.
Currently, Anthropic's subscription system primarily consists of the $20 Pro tier and the Max tier, which starts at $100. Under the previous structure, both subscription levels provided access to all features, with the key difference being that the Max version offered a significantly higher usage quota for Claude Code—typically 5 to 20 times more. If this change is finalized, it could mean developers who wish to use this feature might be compelled to upgrade to the considerably more expensive Max plan, even if their usage doesn't reach an extremely high volume.
In response to the situation, Anthropic engineers later issued an official clarification. According to the statement, the company is currently conducting an A/B test, and the affected users represent approximately 2% of new subscribers. The remaining 98% of new users, along with all existing subscribers across both Pro and Max tiers, will continue to enjoy the current benefits without any interruption for the time being.
Industry analysts suggest this move may be part of a strategy to steer high-frequency users of specific features toward higher-priced plans through feature differentiation. For users planning to subscribe soon, it is advisable to carefully review the benefits list before completing payment. If the page indicates Claude Code is not included, you might try changing your network environment or registering a new account to potentially bypass the test group, ensuring you secure the most complete service experience at the same price point.
