China Unveils First Integrated Smart Operation System for Water, Wind, and Solar Power, Boosting River Flow Forecast Accuracy to 60 Days

Citing reports from CCTV News, China’s first integrated smart operation framework that combines hydroelectric, wind, and solar power sources was officially put into use in the Yalong River Basin located in Sichuan Province. This innovative system was developed by the Yalong River Company, which is part of the China Investment Corporation. Its most significant technological advancement lies in its ability to link together meteorological data, hydrological information, and forecasts for renewable energy resources with the actual decisions made regarding power operation, thus functioning as the “smart brain” behind a large-scale clean energy complex capable of generating tens of millions of kilowatts of electricity.
Outstanding data integration and improved forecasting precision
A key strength of this system is its powerful data integration capabilities. It gathers vast amounts of data from sources such as satellite remote sensing, ground-based meteorological monitoring stations, river basin hydrological observation sites, and sensor devices installed at renewable energy facilities. By consolidating all these inputs, it creates a comprehensive intelligent forecasting platform that covers the entire river basin, includes every relevant resource type, spans multiple time periods, and encompasses the full business cycle—from power generation to scheduling, maintenance, and trading. After being trained on substantial amounts of real-world data and optimized for the complex conditions typical of plateau regions, its forecasting accuracy has seen substantial improvements.
Chen Deliang, an honorary academician with the Chinese Academy of Sciences who specializes in climatology, noted that traditional models could only provide accurate predictions for river basin water inflows for roughly ten days. In contrast, this advanced large-scale model now enables forecasts spanning up to 60 days. The hourly forecast accuracy during the first 10 days has increased by about 5%, and the average accuracy of medium- to long-term daily forecasts from day 11 through day 60 has also improved. Additionally, the speed of meteorological predictions has been accelerated from hours to minutes, markedly boosting operational efficiency.
