ChatGPT Market Share Dips Below 50% as Gemini and Claude Surge, Sensor Tower Says
The 2026 AI Status Report from Sensor Tower shows that while ChatGPT remains the world's most popular AI assistant, its market share has dropped below 50% for the first time. Earlier this year, ChatGPT held over 50% of the global market, but by the end of May, that share had fallen to 46.4%.

Meanwhile, competitors are steadily gaining ground. Google Gemini's market share climbed to 27.7%, while Claude reached 10.3%. Other players like Grok, Perplexity, DeepSeek, and Meta AI each hold less than 5%. The report notes that users are increasingly switching between multiple AI assistants depending on the task, reshaping the competitive dynamics.
The overall market is growing quickly. Sensor Tower projects that global AI app downloads in the first half of 2026 will reach nearly 2.3 billion, with user spending surpassing $4.2 billion—a substantial jump from $1.83 billion in the first half of 2025. Meanwhile, total AI app usage time is expected to more than double, from 17.2 billion hours in the first half of 2025 to around 36 billion hours.
In terms of user engagement, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude together account for 89% of total usage time among AI assistant apps, highlighting a clear advantage for the top players. In contrast, adjacent categories like AI companions and AI content generation are still highly fragmented, with no stable market leader.
As AI assistants increasingly serve as key gateways for information access, content creation, and productivity enhancement, the competitive landscape is evolving from a battle over individual product features to a broader contest encompassing ecosystem breadth, model performance, and user loyalty. The fight for market share among top players is likely to become even more intense.
