ChatGPT Launches Emergency Block Mode to Prevent Data Theft Without Network Shutdown
To help prevent malicious theft of sensitive data, OpenAI has introduced a new optional security feature called "Incident Mode" for all logged-in users. This setting applies across different account types and workspaces, and both users and administrators can choose to enable it. Once activated, ChatGPT will restrict its real-time web search, deep research, and agent capabilities. The aim is to build a security barrier against prompt injection attacks by limiting the model's ability to make external network requests.

Limiting Web Access to Prevent Data Leaks
In Incident Mode, ChatGPT's real-time web browsing is strictly limited to cached content only, which may lead to incomplete or outdated search results. Additionally, the model cannot download files from the internet for data analysis, and code generated by Canvas is also prohibited from making external network requests. However, local features such as user-uploaded images, images generated with tools, and conversation memory remain unaffected by this mode.
Putting Security Decisions Back in Users' Hands
A prompt injection attack occurs when attackers embed malicious instructions within web pages or documents, tricking AI into ignoring its existing rules and sending users' sensitive information to external servers. OpenAI acknowledges that Incident Mode cannot completely eliminate such attacks, as malicious code could still be hidden in cached web pages or user-uploaded files. Faced with the reality that more powerful AI capabilities also expand the attack surface, OpenAI chooses to leave the trade-off between "stronger functionality" and "lower data leakage risk" to the users themselves.
