HomeChatGPT Adds New Computer Feature to Track User Work History
OpenAI has introduced a "Computer History" feature to the ChatGPT macOS desktop application, capturing user activity and converting it into a timeline accessible by ChatGPT and Codex. This tool helps users understand their workflow, receive automated suggestions, and assist with incomplete tasks.
Opt-in by default, this feature allows users to control its activation. Users can exclude specific apps and websites from tracking and delete history entries. Ali Weinstein, Product and Engineering Manager at OpenAI, confirmed that the system automatically ignores content in incognito or private browser tabs.
Demos show Computer History can help locate recently edited documents, verify file sharing via Slack, and summarize morning activities. Unlike Microsoft Windows Recall, which relies on screenshots, OpenAI states this feature does not capture images, videos, or audio. Instead, it builds an activity timeline by recording user actions as "events."
From a product perspective, Computer History expands ChatGPT's understanding of user work context, enabling AI to shift from passive instruction response to continuous status sensing and proactive task assistance. It also emphasizes privacy controls and data boundaries.
