Baidu Appoints Sun Tianxiang as Head of Fundamental Model R&D and Member of its Model Committee

Recent significant changes have occurred within the domain of large-scale AI models, as technology specialist Sun Tianxiang has officially joined Baidu in his role as head of the Basic Model Research and Development Department (BMU). He has also been appointed to seats on the Baidu Model Committee (BMC). The addition of this highly skilled professional underscores Baidu’s ongoing efforts to refine its AI organization structure and build a more systematic talent development framework, initiatives that are expected to boost progress and drive technical advancements in the ERNIE Base model.
At present, Baidu’s large-model research and development efforts are organized into two distinct departments: the Basic Model Research and Development Department (BMU) and the Application Model Research and Development Department (AMU), with Jia Lei serving as leader of the latter. This dual-track approach is designed to improve the efficiency of model development by enabling more targeted division of labor. In recent times, Baidu has made a consistent effort to bring in young technical talent to strengthen its work on basic models.
