Autodesk Invests $200M in World Labs to Integrate World Models into 3D Workflows

Fei-Fei Li's World Labs has secured a $200 million investment from Autodesk, a leading software design company. The collaboration will explore how World Labs' world models—AI systems capable of generating and reasoning about immersive 3D environments—can integrate with Autodesk's tools, and vice versa, beginning with entertainment applications.

Autodesk confirmed this investment is part of a larger funding round for World Labs, though specific details were not disclosed. After emerging from stealth in 2024 with $230 million at a $1 billion valuation, World Labs is reportedly negotiating a new funding round that would value the company at $5 billion.

World Labs has not yet responded to requests for additional information.

For World Labs, Autodesk's investment validates the commercial potential of its technology. The startup's inaugural world model product, Marble, launched last November, enables users to create and edit downloadable 3D environments.

Autodesk is a major developer of 3D CAD (computer-aided design) software, supporting workflows across architecture, engineering, construction, manufacturing, and entertainment. Given its focus on the built environment, investing in advanced spatial AI represents a strategic extension of its core business.

As Li stated: "Autodesk has long enabled spatial thinking and real-world problem-solving. Together, we share a clear mission: developing physical AI that enhances human creativity and equips designers, builders, and creators with more powerful tools."

As part of the agreement, Autodesk will serve as an advisor to World Labs, with both companies collaborating at the research and model level.

Daron Green, Autodesk's chief scientist, told TechCrunch that the partnership is still in its early stages, with specific implementation details yet to be finalized.

"We anticipate scenarios where our models integrate with theirs, or vice versa, across different contexts," Green explained.

He suggested that customers might begin with a world-model sketch in World Labs—such as an office layout—and then refine specific design elements like furniture, where Autodesk's technology could come into play.

"Conversely, you might take an object designed in our platform and place it within a context generated through one of World Labs' prompts," Green added.

Green clarified that data sharing is not part of the current agreement.

The initial focus will be on media and entertainment applications. Most companies developing world models, including Google DeepMind and Runway, view gaming and interactive entertainment as primary entry markets.

Autodesk already collaborates with major media production studios and has been training models for character animation.

"These models approach world simulation," Green noted. "They represent characters responding to physical constraints like time and terrain. By combining this with World Labs' technology, we're not just animating a character but providing an interactive world for it to inhabit."

The partnership with World Labs aligns with Autodesk's broader initiative to embed AI capabilities throughout its software suite. The company is advancing "neural CAD," a generative AI model trained on geometric data that can reason about components and systems. Essentially, it produces functional 3D models with an inherent understanding of real-world performance, not just static images.

Autodesk is already integrating neural CAD models into its product design and architecture solutions, moving toward more sophisticated spatial intelligence. World Labs' technology could further expand this capability from individual design files to comprehensive digital representations of physical environments.

Green believes that combining various AI systems—including large language models, world models, and neural CAD—will ultimately enhance design outcomes for Autodesk's customers.

"For AI to deliver genuine value, it must comprehend worlds, not just words," Li emphasized. "Worlds operate on principles of geometry, physics, and dynamics. Bridging the semantic, spatial, and physical dimensions represents the next major frontier in artificial intelligence."

Fei-Fei Li's move to Autodesk is huge for 3D design. Finally, AI that actually understands spatial logic instead of just flat pixels. Can't wait to see this in Maya or Blender!
