Apple is reportedly exploring potential partnerships with OpenAI or Anthropic to power a significantly upgraded AI version of Siri, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. As development of Apple's own large language model for Siri faces hurdles, the company has reportedly requested versions of external AI models from these firms for testing on its private cloud infrastructure.
The tech giant has spent months trying to get its AI-enhanced Siri project back on schedule after postponing the assistant's major relaunch in March. Apple later restructured the team's leadership, placing Vision Pro head Mike Rockwell in charge of AI and Siri initiatives following CEO Tim Cook's reported loss of confidence in former lead John Giannandrea.
According to the Bloomberg report, Rockwell directed his team to evaluate how external models from Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google handle basic queries compared to Apple's internal systems, with Anthropic's Claude AI showing particular promise. While Google integrates its Gemini AI into Android and Pixel devices, and Samsung licenses it for its phones, Apple is also reportedly in advanced talks with Perplexity AI, which already collaborates with Motorola. Apple executives were recently said to have considered acquiring Perplexity to accelerate its AI capabilities.
Notably, the next-generation "LLM Siri" was a conspicuous absence from Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference this month, where marketing chief Greg Joswiak stated the technology had not yet met the company's quality standards. Bloomberg adds that Apple's plans to integrate a third-party AI model remain at a preliminary stage, and the company continues to develop its own in-house alternatives.
