Apple WWDC 2026 Preview: Cook's Last Show, Siri to Integrate Google Gemini and Undergo Full Revamp
Apple is preparing for a major AI pivot at WWDC 2026, rolling out a significantly upgraded AI-powered Siri alongside a standalone AI assistant app designed to rival ChatGPT. This event, which will mark the final major product unveiling before CEO Tim Cook's official retirement, signals Apple's full commitment to moving past its earlier struggles with artificial intelligence.
Cook has publicly acknowledged that the shortcomings of Apple Intelligence 1.0 were even more severe than the Apple Maps fiasco. Following a confidential executive session in early 2025, he took a hands-on role in shaping the company's AI strategy and initiated a sweeping overhaul.
To shed the internal label "AIMLess" that it once joked about, Apple recently completed a series of leadership changes. Vision Pro founder Mike Rockwell now oversees Siri, software chief Craig Federighi has taken full charge of the AI roadmap, former Google and Microsoft engineering executive Amar Subramanya joined to lead model research, and former AI head John Giannandrea departed earlier this year.
In upcoming system updates—iOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, and visionOS 27—the revamped AI Siri will support chatbot-style conversations and introduce generative AI features for image editing. On the infrastructure side, Apple has formed a deep partnership with Google, leveraging the Gemini model and Google Cloud to completely replace Siri's original underlying technology. This shift underscores how, under pressure from rapid technological advancement, a hardware-software ecosystem giant is accelerating the rebuilding of its core AI capabilities by integrating leading external large language models.
