The image generation tool, Image Playground, which creates AI avatars and Genmojis, has been labeled by many media outlets and users as "Apple's worst AI feature" due to its disappointing output.
However, this is set to change with the new OS27 system version.

According to Bloomberg's latest Power On newsletter, Image Playground will see a "significant improvement" by leveraging Apple's upgraded Apple Foundation (Apple Foundation) model. Notably, Google's Gemini processor has been integrated into Apple's model, and image generation is a core strength of Gemini. This integration of underlying technology is expected to help Image Playground shed its status as "just for chat entertainment" and become a genuinely practical toolset.
Beyond the standalone app, Image Playground will remain an extension interface, deeply integrated into system apps like Notes and Freeform. In iOS27, the system's proactive support for Genmoji will also be greatly enhanced, with preset options appearing directly in the text suggestion box.

Unlike competitors who have faced moral and legal issues by chasing extreme realism, Apple has set clear boundaries for AI image generation:
Reject Deepfakes: Apple will avoid generating overly realistic images entirely, eliminating forgery risks at the source and safeguarding user copyrights and social credibility.
Environmental Protection and Privacy: This feature runs entirely on-device or through private cloud servers powered by renewable energy, ensuring user data never leaks.
