Anthropic Challenges OpenAI with $1 Government Access to Claude AI

Just one week following OpenAI's announcement of a $1-per-year, per-agency ChatGPT Enterprise offer for the entire federal executive branch, Anthropic has countered with a significant move. The AI powerhouse revealed on Tuesday that it too will provide its Claude models to government agencies for a nominal $1 fee, extending the offer beyond the executive branch to encompass "all three branches" of the U.S. government, including the legislative and judicial branches.

Anthropic stated this package will be available for a one-year term.

This development comes after OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind were recently included on the General Services Administration's list of approved AI vendors authorized to sell services to civilian federal agencies. TechCrunch has contacted Google to inquire about any plans to respond similarly to the competitive moves by Anthropic and OpenAI.

Anthropic's escalation, a direct response to OpenAI's competitive pricing strategy, represents a calculated effort to expand the company's influence within federal AI adoption.

"We believe the U.S. public sector must have access to cutting-edge AI capabilities to address complex challenges, from advancing scientific research to improving public services," Anthropic said in a statement. "By ensuring broad accessibility while upholding the highest security standards, we are committed to making AI serve the public good."

Anthropic will offer both Claude for Enterprise and a specialized Claude for Government solution. The government-specific version supports FedRAMP High workloads, enabling federal employees to utilize Claude for sensitive, though unclassified, work according to the company.

FedRAMP High represents a rigorous security standard within the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP) for processing sensitive, unclassified government data.

Additionally, Anthropic will offer technical support to assist agencies with integrating these AI tools into their existing operational workflows.

While Anthropic, alongside OpenAI, xAI, and Google, has secured up to $200 million in Department of Defense funding to apply AI to national security, the company aims to integrate into a wider spectrum of government functions, including scientific research and public health. In its announcement, Anthropic highlighted existing use cases: Claude is being deployed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory to speed up scientific discovery and by the District of Columbia Department of Health to help residents access health services in multiple languages.

Anthropic attributes its ability to make such deployments to Claude's adherence to "the government's highest security standards." Beyond its FedRAMP High certification, clients can access Claude through their existing secure infrastructure via partnerships with AWS, Google Cloud, and Palantir, providing them greater control over their data.

Anthropic's multi-cloud accessibility may provide a competitive advantage over OpenAI, whose current official FedRAMP High offering is exclusively tied to Azure Government Cloud. Although Azure is prevalent in government, some agencies and security teams may value data sovereignty, infrastructure control, and the operational flexibility inherent in a multi-cloud strategy.

OpenAI is reportedly working to decrease its dependence on Azure to adopt a more diversified infrastructure approach.
