Anthropic Joins Frontier Alliance, Becomes First AI Startup Focused on Carbon Removal
AI startup Anthropic officially joined the carbon removal alliance Frontier on June 17, 2026, committing $915 million in new funding. As the first pure-play AI company to join, this landmark climate transaction nearly doubled Frontier’s total commitments to $1.8 billion. The organization has already contracted nearly $700 million across 50+ projects, including direct air capture and enhanced rock weathering, targeting the removal of 1.8 million tons of carbon.

The AI sector is currently locked in a fierce competition for energy resources. The massive power demands of model training and data centers are testing the climate pledges of major tech firms. Previously, Anthropic’s lack of a sustainability report and its mixed energy sourcing strategy raised concerns about its reliance on polluting power. This partnership with Frontier marks a strategic pivot toward clean energy. Since some emissions, like business travel, are hard to eliminate entirely, tech companies are increasingly using Frontier-approved carbon removal credits to offset their disclosed carbon footprints.
