The Android 16 beta includes an early look at Google's new Desktop Mode, a feature that could eventually allow users to connect their phone to a monitor and use it like a laptop or desktop PC.
This new functionality was detailed by Android enthusiast Mishaal Rahman for Android Authority. Rahman enabled the Desktop Mode in developer settings on his Google Pixel 8 Pro running the Android 16 beta. Upon connecting to a USB-C monitor, it instantly projected a computer-style interface to the external display, as shown in his demonstration video:
The interface bears a resemblance to Samsung's DeX feature, which enables a windowed desktop experience when docking a Galaxy phone to a monitor.
Android Desktop Mode positions the system status bar at the top for information like Wi-Fi and signal strength, while a taskbar at the bottom allows for pinning apps for quick access. This taskbar also includes a Start Menu–style app launcher and provides Android's native navigation buttons on its right side. Apps run in resizable windows, similar to the tablet interface, and include PC-like capabilities such as snapping windows to either side of the screen.
Last year, Rahman discovered an earlier iteration of Google's desktop experience that primarily allowed placing a resizable app window on a larger screen. By March, Google had enhanced the feature with a display arrangement setting. This lets users visually configure the position of their phone screen relative to the monitor to simplify cursor movement between them, mirroring the multi-display setup found in desktop operating systems.
Rahman notes that Desktop Mode may not be finalized for the initial release of Android 16, expected this spring. It could arrive in a subsequent quarterly update or potentially be part of Android 17, which likely won't launch until 2026.
