Alibaba renames large model brand to Qwen, integrating brand matrix
Alibaba has unified its AI business under the Qwen brand, marking a strategic shift in its artificial intelligence focus. The former Tongyi Qianwen series is now officially renamed Qwen Large Model, encompassing both foundational and specialized domain models. The consumer-facing flagship application has been rebranded as Qwen APP, while Tongyi Lab continues as the name of Alibaba Group's AI research and development organization.

This brand integration builds on the strong technological and market performance of the Qwen Large Model. On Chinese New Year's Eve 2026, Alibaba open-sourced the Qwen3.5 model series. With exceptional performance and energy efficiency, several models in the series secured the top four positions on Hugging Face's global open-source large model rankings, becoming among the most active open-source models in the developer community worldwide.
Market data shows that during the 2026 Spring Festival, Qwen APP users placed nearly 200 million "one-sentence orders." According to QuestMobile, Qwen's daily active users reached 73.52 million during the holiday, representing a 940% increase and ranking first among domestic AI applications, signaling its emergence as a national-level AI assistant.
Industry analysts believe that Alibaba's brand unification aims to strengthen its leadership in both the open-source ecosystem and consumer market by simplifying its brand and consolidating recognition. As the Qwen3.5 system matures, domestic large models are rapidly aligning with global top standards in open-source depth and application penetration. This transition from technological leadership to brand ecosystem development is expected to further reshape the competitive landscape of the domestic large model industry.
