Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky to Launch New Artificial Intelligence Lab
Airbnb is stepping up its investment in artificial intelligence. Bloomberg reports that CEO Brian Chesky plans to establish a new AI lab dedicated to next-generation AI products and interaction methods. TechCrunch later confirmed the news through insiders.
Chesky has long been a prominent figure in Silicon Valley's AI ecosystem. Although Airbnb already uses AI coding tools internally, Chesky has publicly stated that current large language models aren't fully mature yet, which is why the company hasn't formed deep partnerships with any model providers.
Notably, Chesky maintains a longstanding close relationship with Sam Altman. They first met through Y Combinator in 2006. As OpenAI rose rapidly, Chesky frequently exchanged ideas with Altman and shared his experience managing high-growth tech companies. During the 2023 OpenAI board crisis, Chesky helped Altman return to leadership and was seen as one of his key supporters.

Now, Chesky appears to be moving from a supporter to an active participant in the AI ecosystem. According to the report, the lab's specific research directions haven't been disclosed yet, but they are expected to focus on user interaction experiences and product design innovation—areas Chesky has prioritized at Airbnb.
Industry observers see similarities with Hark, the AI lab founded by Brett Adcock. Hark focuses on developing new interaction interfaces for AI assistants and exploring product forms that blend software and hardware.
Chesky won't serve as the founder or head of the new lab. Instead, he will remain Airbnb's CEO and participate as an investor and promoter. The lab will compete with leading AI organizations like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, while also tackling the challenge of defining new AI product paradigms.
As of now, neither Airbnb nor Brian Chesky has commented on this news.
As more tech companies build their own AI R&D capabilities, the competition is shifting from model performance to product experience and user interactions. Chesky's bet on an AI lab reflects Silicon Valley entrepreneurs' ongoing exploration of next-generation AI product forms.
