As artificial intelligence advances rapidly, malicious actors are increasingly leveraging AI tools to fabricate misinformation for traffic gains. This practice severely disrupts the online ecosystem and negatively impacts social stability.
Manufacturing Public Panic
Recently, at Shanghai Metro Line 18’s Jiangpu Road Station, minor paint peeling occurred on the ceiling of a transfer passage. No injuries were reported. Metro staff promptly installed warning signs, identified water leakage as the likely cause, and completed initial repairs.
However, Sun, an out-of-province resident, exploited this incident. Using AI to generate a fabricated video claiming "a large section of the Shanghai metro ceiling collapsed," she posted it on her WeChat channel. The post triggered public panic and caused significant social disruption.
Police Intervention
Through inter-provincial police cooperation, transit authorities quickly identified and arrested Sun. She is currently under administrative detention for allegedly creating and spreading online rumors.
The use of AI to generate realistic fake text, images, audio, and video is becoming a prevalent method for disseminating online rumors. Given the high realism and potential for deception, the public must exercise caution, avoiding belief or sharing of unverified information.
