OpenAI has released an updated version of ChatGPT for macOS, adding deep integration with Apple’s Messages app. With explicit user permission, the upgraded app can read, write, and send messages directly on Macs, search through chat history, and generate conversation summaries. It does not build a global message index and relies solely on user authorization and local system integration. Users must grant multiple permissions in the app and Apple’s System Settings, including full disk access and use of contact data. Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman says this move breaks through limitations of Apple’s desktop apps and challenges Apple’s Siri AI and ecosystem advantages.
